A Black Lives Matter leader slammed New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Thursday, calling him a “white man in blackface” and “a coon.”
Black Lives Matter of Greater New York co-founder Hawk Newsome made those comments during an interview on Fox News in response to what the mayor said last week, when he accused Black Lives Matter activists of hypocrisy after a string of black-on-black shootings.
“I thought Black Lives Matter. Where are all those who stated ‘Black Lives Matter’? Then go do an analysis of who was killed or shot last night. I was up all night speaking to my commanders in the Bronx, in Brooklyn. The victims were black. Many of the shooters were black,” Adams said on Spectrum News NY1 on April 14.
“If Black Lives Matter, then the thousands of people I saw on the street when [George] Floyd was murdered should be on the street right now stating that the lives of these black children that are dying every night matter. We can’t be hypocrites,” he said, referring to the 2020 murder of black man George Floyd by Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin.
“America’s Newsroom” co-host Bill Hemmer asked Newsome about the mayor’s comments and about FBI data that shows a 32% increase in black Americans killed by violent crime since 2019.
“The subject is African-Americans. I would also argue white lives matter, too. Everybody’s life matters here,” Hemmer said. “What the mayor contends, though, is that the same reaction is not given. What would you say to him?”
“It was smooth the way you threw white lives matters in there. Our problem is when black lives are oppressed and don’t receive justice, nobody cares, nothing happens. Something happens to a white person, the world moves, right?” Newsome answered. “So, let’s get back to Eric Adams. This mayor who’s a Democrat but he spews conservative and Republican talking points. At the end of the day, we have a name for someone like this. And this is someone we’d call a coon, right?”
“Whoa!” Hemmer exclaimed.
“He is a black man – he’s a white man in blackface, and a very conservative-minded white man, at that. So what we have is a man with hundreds of people on the city’s payroll, billions of dollars in budget, and 40,000 police officers,” Newsome continued. “He has 10 victims in one night. The night before he had 16 shooting victims on the train and they say what are you going to do about policing and he says what about BLM? Is America not smart enough to see him deflecting?”
He went on to accuse Adams of failing to keep the city safe.
“This city is a war zone, and he can’t stop it,” Newsome said. “So with all his power he turns to BLM and says, what are you going to do? Well, I’ll tell you what we’re going to do. We’re going to organize people in our communities to go out and preach a message of love and unification in the streets. We’re going to take control of our cities because the government has failed us for decades. Even when crime is low, we’re still dying, and we have to fix this problem ourselves.”
“We believe that poverty is the mother of crime. And until we fix that, they’ll never be a decrease in crime,” he said.
