Law enforcement officials released shocking body cam video from police related to the arrest of Tyre Nichols that may have led to his death three days later.
Nichols was pulled over for allegedly driving erratically on Jan. 7 when police said he was injured in an altercation with police. He was transported to a hospital in an ambulance but died three days later.
Police released four videos showing the arrest.
On Thursday, the five officers reportedly involved in the arrest were themselves arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Officials worried that the release of the video would inspire violent protests and rioting in Memphis and other areas. RowVaughn Wells, the mother of Nichols, issued a statement asking for those angered by the death of her son to avoid violence.
“I want each and every one of you to protest in peace. I don’t want us burning up our city, tearing up the streets because that is not what my son stood for,” said Wells. “If you guys are here for Tyre and me, then you will protest peacefully.”
A GoFundMe memorial fund has been set up by the family.
