Breaking: Republicans win control of the House of Representatives, ending Democratic control of Congress

Several news outlets projected on Wednesday that the Republican Party had won narrow control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

The results were delayed by more than a week because of the slim margins of victory some representatives-elect gained and how long many states took to count their ballots.

CBS, CNN, the Associated Press, and NBC all projected Republicans would win with more than the 218 seats needed to have a House majority, possibly possessing 221 seats, by one estimate.

Although Republicans won the House, the results of the elections were a great disappointment in general after many polls and pundits predicted a “red wave” of Republican victories. Some predicted that the GOP might even take control of the U.S. Senate, but those hopes have been dashed.

One Senate seat in Georgia was forced into a runoff election, which will determine if the Democrats will have outright control of the legislative body or if it will be split evenly between the two parties.

President Joe Biden, a Democrat, responded to the Republican takeover with a brief statement.

“Last week’s elections demonstrated the strength and resilience of American democracy. There was a strong rejection of election deniers, political violence, and intimidation. There was an emphatic statement that, in America, the will of the people prevails,” wrote Biden in part.

“The American people want us to get things done for them. They want us to focus on the issues that matter to them and on making their lives better,” he added. “And I will work with anyone – Republican or Democrat – willing to work with me to deliver results for them.”

The runoff election between Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican candidate Herschel Walker to decide Georgia’s seat in the U.S. Senate will be held on December 6.
