Medical professionals and some parents in Florida are complaining about how much harder it’s getting to perform highly controversial and often irreversible gender-transition surgeries or hormone treatments on children now that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is cracking down on such extreme forms of “gender-affirming care.”
Florida’s medical board has begun the process of banning certain “gender-affirming medical treatments” for children and adolescents following guidance from the Florida Department of Health, which recommends against puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and gender reassignment surgery for anyone under 18. DeSantis has said he would support legislation preventing children from undergoing gender-transition surgeries.
As a result, gender-transition surgeries for children are being canceled, and several pediatric clinics and hospitals in Florida have stopped prescribing puberty blockers and hormones for children, Michael Haller, chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times.
But BlazeTV’s Sara Gonzales, host of “The News & Why It Matters,” believes what’s happening in Florida is actually a cause for celebration.
“Professionals and parents in Florida are complaining, they’re really sad, you guys, because the, of course, highly controversial transgender treatment of children is becoming — as it turns out, when you have a based governor — a lot harder to actually perform,” Sara said. “So all of these pediatric centers who do this, they’ve stopped taking on patients to their gender clinics, they’ve stopped prescribing puberty blockers and hormones, which I find to be amazing news. Like I would love to celebrate … I wish we had some champagne!”
