Man tries to fend off teen attackers with his cane. Police say they fatally shot him.

A 49-year-old Texas man is dead after a group of teens accosted him, harassed him, and then shot him, Houston police said on Monday.

What are the details?

The gang approached the Texas man, who remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, around 8:40 p.m. local time on Monday and began taunting him, KPRC-TV reported.

The attack and subsequent killing took place on a city street behind a Walmart store.

“They were harassing him. They got to the corner right behind me … They were messing with him,” Lieutenant J.P. Horelica of the Houston Police Department told the station of the moments that led up to the slaying.

He added that the victim swung his cane at the group in an attempt to fend off the attack, but was unsuccessful in staving off the taunting teens.

“The females were trying to get the two males to leave,” Horelica continued. “All of them start to walk off; one of the males in the group turned around and fired one shot, striking our victim in the chest.”

Investigators said that the group was made up of boys and girls who ranged in ages from 14 to 18 years old.

Though first responders rushed to the scene and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Authorities are seeking surveillance footage of the incident, and say that there is least one witness who is cooperating with the investigation. KTRK-TV has reported that there are no suspects in custody at the time of this reporting, and a motive for the attack and subsequent slaying has yet to be established.

Those with information on the case are asked to call the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or its Crime Stoppers division at (713) 222-TIPS.
