Progressive group says running Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee ‘would be a tragic mistake,’ and that it will campaign to ensure he is not nominated

The progressive group RootsAction will campaign to prevent President Joe Biden from becoming the Democratic presidential nominee during the 2024 election cycle.

“Unfortunately, President Biden has been neither bold nor inspiring. And his prospects for winning re-election appear to be bleak. With so much at stake, making him the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer in 2024 would be a tragic mistake,” RootsAction declared in a statement. “The #DontRunJoe campaign will launch nationwide on November 9, 2022 — the day after the midterm elections.”

“A president is not his party’s king, and he has no automatic right to renomination. Joe Biden should not seek it. If he does, he will have a fight on his hands,” the statement said.

President Biden said late last year that he plans to run for re-election as long as he has “good health.”

Biden, who has already made history as the oldest president in U.S. history, would be 86 years old at the end of a second term in office. He has been underwater on job approval in various polls for quite some time.

“We’re making this announcement today because the current debate over whether Biden should run again focuses too narrowly on his age and the latest polls,” RootsAction cofounder Jeff Cohen said, according to the RootsAction press release. “It’s his performance — his inability to fight for working people and stand up against Republican and corporate obstruction — that has us worried about 2024.”

“Democrats would do better in this year’s midterms if the public knew Biden would not be heading the ticket in 2024,” Cohen told Fox News Digital. “We believe that would shift voters’ attention away from Biden to the extremism of Republicans, on everything from abortion rights to voting rights to climate-change denial.”

A recent New York Times/Siena College survey of registered voters found that among individuals who indicated that they plan to vote in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary, 64% think the party should nominate someone other than Biden for the 2024 presidential contest, while just 26% think Biden should be the nominee again.

“If you’re in touch with Democratic Party activists, the frustration is palpable,” Cohen said, according to Politico. “Biden appears to be dithering while progressive achievements just go out the window, from abortion rights to the Clean Air Act.”
